Is there a difference between lighting a house and outlining one?
It is worth asking what the word adds. Outlining a building traces its edges. Architectural lighting works with the features the building already has. One treats the house as a shape. The other reads the gables, the columns, the entry and the stone.None of that requires an architect or a vocabulary test. The useful test is whether somebody can point at your building and tell you what the plan responds to. If the answer describes your building, there is a design behind it. If it describes a product, you are talking to a salesperson.
What a plan looks at
Look at almost any house and there are two or three features doing the heavy lifting. A front gable. A covered entry. A dormer line. A change in material. A deep porch. Those are where the design starts, and the rest of the plan supports them.
Contrast is the tool
Most people assume brighter is better. It is backwards. Depth needs shadow, and the dark sections carry as much of the design as the bright ones. Light everything evenly and the building goes flat.A building lit this

Homes and businesses are two different briefs
On a house, the brief is curb appeal and a well lit approach to the door. On a commercial building, there is a business reason attached: it needs to be found, and it needs to read as in business. A lit facade carries further than a sign does, and it can change with the season.
Where the LED system fits
A permanent LED system is architectural lighting that also happens to do holidays. Set to a single soft white, it does the everyday job. Switched to color, it is a holiday display.
The techniques, translated
Designers have shorthand for a handful of techniques. A wash spreads light broadly. Grazing is light run tight across a face so every bit of texture throws a shadow, which is why masonry gets grazed rather than washed. Uplight works on verticals.
Warm or cooler on different materials
There is a range of whites, and the right one depends on what you are lighting. Warm feels domestic, and it makes earth toned materials look right. Cooler white can suit grey stone, glass and modern facades, though it goes cold and clinical fast. Mixing them on one building is the mistake to avoid.
